Denis Lawson was born in Crieff, Perth and Kinross and trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He is perhaps best known for his role as Gordon Urquhart in the film Local Hero. His theatre credits include: Bits of Lenny Bruce at The Kings Head Theatre, Pal Joey at Half Moon Theatre / Albery Theatre, Mr Cinders at The Kings Head Theatre / Fortune Theatre (Olivier Award for Best Actor in A Musical), Lend Me A Tenor at The Globe Theatre, Ashes at The Bush Theatre, The Importance of Being Earnest at The Royalty Theatre, Volpone at The Almeida Theatre, Lust at The Theatre Royal Haymarket / The Walnut Stree Theatre, Philadelphia (US Barrymore Award) and Oleanna at The Duke of York's Theatre.
His TV credits include: The Kit Curran Radio Show, Dead Head, That Uncertain Feeling, The Justice Game, The Ambassador, Hornblower, Other People's Children, Leonard, Bob Martin, The Fabulous Bagel Boys, Lucky Jim, Holby City, Sensitive Skin, Bleak House (BAFTA and Emmy Nominated) Jekyll, The Passion, Mumbai Calling, Mr Eleven, No Holds Bard, Above Their Stations, Law & Order, Enid and Criminal Justice II. Credits as a director include Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs at The Hampstead and Comedy Theatre and The Anniversary at Liverpool Playhouse and The Garrick Theatre. Denis has written and directed two films, The Bassplayer and Solid Geometry.
